"Drag Uman" ("Human Drag") series. In the media, queer expression and drag is rarely ever depicted outside of clubs or stylised photo settings. I have found that some of the most beautiful moments of queer expression and drag have been in domestic settings and behaviour, and uniquely in ways that relate to Maltese culture. The aim of this photographic series is to express the radical nature of drag amongst the ordinary. How beautifully they contrast and emphasize one another. I think this is especially important to do because of the increasing dangerous politicization of those who express themselves outside of the gender binary, especially in Malta. This is what really motivated me to do this series.

 

About the Artist 

Nick Ebejer is an emerging Maltese multimedia artist and activist. His preferred media include drag (and everything that consists of), performance & installation, as well as other 2d media such as analogue photography, pastels, graphite, and print. Much of his work addresses the intersection of his queer and Maltese identity, as well as other themes such as the surreal human experience and the complexities of emotion.

  • This artwork is part of The Big Gay Art Show, a collective exhibition celebrating queer Maltese and Malta-based artists, displayed at Cafe Society in Valletta between the 7th and 30th of September 2023
