The Maltese farmer working his fields with such great diligence from dusk till dawn, come rain or shine, while his cattle grazes on the grass nearby. This is the life of the countryside - a typical agricultural landscape which foreign visitors would often come across.

Other scenes illustrated in vintage postcards and photos during those times show the primitive farming methods Maltese farmers used to work their land, with the help of an ox, mule or a donkey which served the farmer to plough the land or thresh the wheat. Maltese farmers were faced with many struggles, mainly the lack of sufficient water.

Visitors observed and admired the advanced knowledge and skill of the hard working Maltese rural inhabitants.
