Visual Ode to Willi Ninja is a hand-cut photo-montage/collage that features and celebrates Willi Ninja as one of the legendary pioneers of voguing. This artwork seeks to acknowledge the impact that the 1980s underground ballroom scene in New York has had on the development of queer culture.
The figure of Ninja in motion is juxtaposed with items that denote wealth, divinity and status, such as fine jewelry by Wallace Chan, a late 19th-century Dutch Nautilus cup, a Georgian eye miniature, and a Catholic monstrance. This is intended to associate queerness with refinery and holiness, in an effort to reclaim our own narrative.
Andrew Inguanez is a Malta-based multimedia artist who specialises in hand-cut collages. In his artistic practice, Andrew often seeks to combine traditional and digital processes, techniques and tools, in an effort to create connections between different sources of inspiration, such as nature, visual art, fashion, music, and photography.
